Before you book
- Ask which credential they hold: CNM (certified nurse-midwife), CM (certified midwife) or CPM / LM (certified professional or licensed midwife). What each may do depends on your state.
- Ask where they attend births (hospital, birth center or home) and which hospital they work with if you need to transfer.
- Ask which insurance they take. Nurse-midwives are often in network; home birth midwives may charge a package fee.

Common questions
What's the difference between a CNM and a CPM?
A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse with graduate training in midwifery and is licensed in every state. A certified professional midwife (CPM) is trained in birth outside the hospital; whether a CPM can be licensed depends on the state.
Can a midwife care for me after the birth?
Yes. Midwives usually see you for postpartum checkups, and many help with feeding and recovery in the first weeks.
