Before you book
- Ask whether they offer birth support, postpartum support or both.
- Ask about their training (for example DONA, CAPPA or a state doula certification) and how many families they've supported.
- Ask what's included: prenatal visits, being on call, how long they stay after the birth and postpartum check-ins.
- Some state Medicaid programs and some private plans pay for doula care. Ask whether they accept your coverage.

Common questions
What does a doula do?
A birth doula supports you through labor with comfort measures, positions, information and help speaking up for what you want. A postpartum doula helps at home after the birth with feeding, rest, newborn care and recovery. Doulas don't do medical tasks.
Does insurance pay for a doula?
Some state Medicaid programs cover doula care, and some private plans reimburse it. Ask the doula and your plan before you book.
When should I hire a doula?
Many families interview birth doulas in the second trimester, but it's rarely too late to ask. Postpartum doulas can often start within days.
